Tony’s Open Chain welcomes ALDI as the first global discount retailer as a mission ally!
Tony’s Open Chain is going global: the second mission ally to join the Open Chain is discount retailer ALDI. More mission allies means more cocoa beans, which in turn means more impact. Because only together can we make chocolate 100% slave free.
ALDI has joined Tony’s Open Chain and developed the Choceur CHOCO CHANGER chocolate bar. They source their beans using Tony’s 5 Sourcing Principles to take direct responsibility for their supply chain, creating positive change in the cocoa sector and thereby aiming to end poverty which stands at the root of chocolate’s bitter truth.
“I’m proud to welcome ALDI as a new mission ally. Together, we can amplify our impact on the ground. It proves the Open Chain model works and we are ready to scale.”
- Paul Schoenmakers, Head of Impact at Tony’s Chocolonely
The new chocolate bar will be released in spring 2021 in selected ALDI markets.* Buying the ALDI Choceur CHOCO CHANGER will support the cocoa farming communities in Côte d'Ivoire and Ghana where the cocoa beans are sourced.
ALDI is joining Tony’s Open Chain as a mission ally to support our mission to change the norm in the cocoa industry. ALDI will drive change and raise consumer awareness in more than ten countries. By improving the working conditions along their supply chain, ALDI contributes to empowering cocoa farming communities in West Africa, and works alongside our other Open Chain mission allies towards ending poverty, illegal child labour, and deforestation in the cocoa sector.
“We are convinced that being a mission ally of Tony’s Open Chain enables us to offer our customers a fair and 100% responsible bar of chocolate. With this chocolate bar, we create positive change and offer a best practice product while doing our part to respect human rights and nature in the cocoa supply chain.“
- Anke Ehlers, Managing Director of Corporate Responsibility International at the ALDI SOUTH Group
“The Choceur CHOCO CHANGER is going to set a new benchmark in the cocoa supply chain in terms of transparency, secured income and improved livelihood for farmers. ALDI is proud to drive this change forward and to raise consumer awareness in eleven countries”
- Erik Hollmann, Director of Corporate Responsibility and Quality Assurance at the ALDI Nord Group.
To end modern slavery and illegal child labour in the chocolate industry, change needs to happen on a big scale. Only when all chocolate-making companies work together, we can make all chocolate 100% slave free. This is why Tony’s Open Chain is newly upgraded to get more companies on board the mission – the initiative is now ready to scale!
