Tony's Open Chain Lead at Tony’s Chocolonely, Joke Aerts, says:We are absolutely thrilled to welcome our first UK Mission Ally, Pleese, and our second UK Mission Ally, Huel, to Tony's Open Chain. They join a network of brands committed to changing the norm in the cocoa industry, by committing long-term to paying a price that enables a living income for cocoa farmersThey join an unstoppable movement to close the gap to a living income for cocoa farmers.

Huel is the brand on a mission to make nutritionally complete, convenient, affordable food. All the cocoa in Huel’s range will be sourced according to Tony’s Open Chain sourcing principles and we estimate that in one year this will mean an additional 300 metric tonnes of cocoa sourced according to Tony’s 5 Sourcing Principles from Ghana and Côte D’Ivoire, and many more cocoa farmers enabled to earn a living income.

Launched in 2015 by Julian Hearn, Huel’s mission is to make nutritionally complete, convenient and affordable food, with minimal impact on animals and the environment. Offering consumers “complete nutrition” means that each Huel meal serves customers the perfect balance of protein, carbs, fibre, essential fats and phytonutrients, plus all 26 essential vitamins and minerals required on a daily basis. Formulated by Registered Nutritionist and Huel Co-Founder, James Collier, Huel is vegan, lactose-free and soya-free.

Huel is available in its original powdered range as well as a Ready-to-drink format, a Hot & Savoury lunch option, on-the-go snack bars and a protein powder. All Huel products take less than 5 minutes to prepare and provide an innovative solution perfect for time-poor consumers. Each Huel pouch has a 6 month+ shelf life which minimises food waste and offers multiple servings to reduce packaging waste. Huel’s carbon footprint has shown our products are lower carbon than most commonly eaten alternative food products.

Jessica Sansom, Sustainability Director, Huel comments: Huel dreams of a sustainable food future. One which protects and nourishes both people and the planet. Whilst our current system is not that, we are convinced that it is possible. And it is initiatives such as Tony’s Open Chain which are key to success. The 5 sourcing principles are holistic and the approach is collaborative. We are excited and proud to join their initiative, to work alongside other Open Chain allies, and to call other brands to join the path for an equitable cocoa industry.
